Quakers Hill WRRF advanced treatment upgrade

Building Resilience: Upgrading our wastewater systems

We're upgrading our existing infrastructure to support the growth of the catchment area and ensure our treated wastewater meets the revised environmental framework.

About this project

With the Quakers Hill Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) expected to reach capacity in 2028, we're investing in upgrades to expand its ability to treat wastewater to meet the needs of a growing community. This will ensure we continue to support the development of the surrounding areas and meet updated environmental regulations.

This project involves:

  • Upgrading the current Quakers Hill WRRF to increase wastewater treatment capacity.
  • Building a new advanced water treatment plant (AWTP) that will include technologies including ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis to create highly treated recycled water.
  • Construction of a new brine pipeline from Quakers Hill WRRF that will connect to an existing wastewater system called the Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer (NSOOS) in Seven Hills. This pipeline will transport brine (a by-product of the advanced wastewater treatment process) to deep ocean outfalls where it can be diluted naturally and safely.
  • Early site preparation and groundwork at the Quakers Hill WRRF, establishing the site to enable the construction of the new AWTP.

Benefits

  • Expanding the treatment capacity and network to accommodate changes in demand as our community grows.
  • Protecting and enhancing the health of our local waterways by improving the quality of water released into the environment.
  • Improving the circular economy of our water supply, with the potential for local stakeholders to access recycled water for uses such as cooling, urban greening or supporting data centres.
  • Providing flexibility and capacity to service alternative futures, such as a purified recycled water (PRW) scheme.

Impacts

During construction, residents may be temporarily affected by noise, vibration, dust and additional traffic from construction vehicles. As the project progresses, we'll continue to engage with the community to discuss options to further minimise impacts.
