Thornleigh pipeline duplication

Boosting resilience of the local water supply

We're duplicating the 1.4-kilometre drinking water pipeline between Thornleigh Reservoir and the Thornleigh-Wahroonga Water Pumping Station so water can be transferred between both locations. This will provide ongoing clean and reliable water as the area continues to grow.

About this project

The new pipeline will start at Thornleigh Reservoir and be tunnelled about 1.2 kilometres to the south side of Zig-Zag Creek at the Thornleigh-Wahroonga Water Pumping Station.

The new pipeline, which is 180 centimetres in diameter, will run parallel to the existing one. It will go under private properties and cross local roads, between 14 and 38 metres underground.

About 160 metres of the pipeline will be trenched within the Thornleigh Reservoir site, and the rest will be tunnelled using a small tunnel-boring machine. This method minimises environmental and community impact.

Our infrastructure delivery is timed to support the NSW Government's growth ambitions and aligned with housing supply policy. New infrastructure, amplifications and upgrades will ensure the resilience and reliability of our water supply for generations to come.

Benefits

The project will increase the resilience of the local water supply and cater for the growing demand in Sydney's north.

Impacts

  • Some vegetation will be removed from the access road at the reservoir and south-east of Thornleigh Reservoir.
  • To reduce noise impacts, we'll use hoarding equipment around sites and acoustic barriers around generators. We'll keep the local community informed about what to expect throughout the work.
  • There will be temporary adjustments to pedestrian access around the Edmundson Close walkway.

Thornleigh pipeline duplication community update – February 2025

In 2024, we consulted on the Review of Environment Factors (REF) and gained valuable feedback from the community on the project. We have outlined the main themes raised below. Responses to the feedback we received can be found in the Decision Report for the REF, which is published on this page. The recommendation is for the project to proceed with additional mitigation measures.
