Willoughby Submain

Planning for future growth

We're planning to upgrade the Willoughby Submain to support future growth and keep wastewater services reliable for the community.

About this project

We're investigating options to upgrade the Willoughby Submain, which was built in 2 stages in 1898 and 1910. The submain is a major wastewater carrier. It collects flows from the Willoughby catchment and discharges them to the Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer (NSOOS).

The Willoughby Submain currently supports about 78,000 residents across suburbs including Artarmon, Cammeray, Crows Nest, St Leonards, Naremburn, North Sydney and Willoughby. By 2056, the area's population is expected to grow to about 109,000, with most of this growth occurring by 2031.

Preparing the wastewater network now helps ensure we're ready for future growth. Our plan is to upgrade the Willoughby Submain so it can meet expected housing growth and support the growing communities in the North Sydney and Willoughby LGAs.

Benefits

The planned upgrade will:

  • ensure the network can meet future demand
  • maintain reliable, compliant services
  • protect public health and the environment
  • support the needs of our growing community.

Impacts

Locally, you may see some early investigation work, such as environmental studies, surveys and geotechnical testing. These activities help us understand ground conditions, locate underground services and identify any potential impacts on the community, such as noise, vibration, dust and visual impacts, or temporary changes to access and traffic.
