Circular Quay Tank Stream work

Restoring the Tank Stream culvert

We're rehabilitating a portion of the historic Tank Stream culvert. This is a stormwater drain situated beneath the southern end of First Fleet Park at Circular Quay.

About this project

The project aims to restore the Tank Stream culvert to keep it working well, ensure safety and preserve its historical value.

Built in 1858, the Tank Stream culvert is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. It now serves as a major stormwater drain to Sydney's CBD. Previously, it also functioned as an open water supply channel (a freshwater stream) and as a sewer.

Historically, the Tank Stream was the main source of fresh water in the Warrane (Circular Quay) area. The local Gadigal people made and used nawi (canoes) and important tools like shellfish hooks here. Having reliable access to fresh water was the reason the First Fleet settled in Sydney Cove. As a result, the stream has influenced the shaping of Sydney over the past 2 centuries.

Benefits

  • Restoring the culvert ensures it continues to manage stormwater effectively, reducing the risk of flooding in the Sydney CBD.
  • By maintaining the culvert's structural integrity, the project helps protect public safety.
  • Preserving this historical site maintains its cultural significance and educates future generations about Sydney's early water management.

Impacts

We will implement measures to minimise noise from our equipment and vehicles. Temporary fencing may be set up around our work areas in First Fleet Park and under the Cahill Expressway. Our work vehicles will enter via George Street, and signs will be in place to manage traffic.
