Learn where your water goes and find out how you can become a Water Saving Superhero. This exciting collaboration combines Sydney’s water experts with Australia’s favourite entertainers to share important messages about using water wisely.

Water is essential to our life. It’s what keeps us hydrated, clean and helps us have fun!

Fun Wiggly experiments to understand how the natural water cycle works!

Evaporation

Evaporation happens when the sun comes out and warms up the water. The water from oceans, lakes, and puddles turns into invisible water vapour and goes up into the air.
 

Think of it like: Water "disappearing" into the sky.

 

What you need:

1. A small bowl of water

2. A sunny windowsill

 

What to do:

1. Fill the bowl with water and put it in the sun. 

2. Check the water level in the morning and again later in the day.

 

What happens:

The water slowly “disappears” because the sun warms it and turns it into vapour that goes into the air. 


 



 

 

Condensation

When the water vapour gets high up and the air is cooler, it turns into tiny drops and makes clouds.

 

 

 

Think of it like: The sky is making fluffy pillows out of water!

 

What you need:

1. A clear glass jar

2. Hot water (ask an adult for help!)

3. A plate that fits on top of the jar

4. A few ice cubes

 

What to do:

1. Ask an adult to pour hot water into the jar (about 3 cm).

2. Cover the jar with the plate.

3. Put ice cubes on top of the plate.

4. Wait for 1–2 minutes and look inside.

 

What happens:

Mist forms inside the jar, like a tiny cloud! The hot water makes vapour rise, and the cold plate cools it down, turning it back into drops, just like clouds forming in the sky.

 
 

 

Precipitation

When the clouds get heavy with lots of water drops, they let the water fall back down as rain, snow, or hail.

 

 

 

Think of it like: Clouds are sharing water with us.

 

What You Need:

1. Clear jar

2. Warm water

3. Shaving foam

4. Food colouring
 

What to Do:

1. Fill the jar halfway with warm water.

2. Spray shaving foam on top.

3. In another glass mix together some food colouring and water.

4. Drop the coloured water onto the foam using a spoon.

 

What Happens:

The shaving foam acts like a cloud. When it gets full of water and can’t hold any more, the coloured water falls down just like precipitation. 

 

 

The natural water cycle never ends.

The natural water cycle repeats and evaporation starts again. For billions of years, water has been going around the earth though this cycle.

All the water on earth is all the water we have. There is no new water. This is why it is so important we look after our water, use it wisely and do everything we can to save it!
