Quakers Hill WRRF advanced treatment upgrade

Supporting a growing community and healthier waterways

We’re upgrading the Quakers Hill Water Resource Recovery Facility to support Sydney’s growing north-west. The upgrade will increase how much wastewater the facility can treat and add advanced treatment processes, helping us provide reliable wastewater services as the community grows while supporting healthier local waterways.

About this project

Sydney’s north-west is growing, with more homes, businesses and jobs planned for the region. We’re upgrading the Quakers Hill Water Resource Recovery Facility so essential wastewater services can keep pace with this growth.

The upgrade includes improvements to the existing facility and a new Advanced Water Treatment Plant. Together, these improvements will help the facility treat more wastewater and meet the needs of the growing community.

Most construction will happen within the existing Sydney Water site, helping to reduce impacts on surrounding neighbourhoods and public spaces.

We’ll also need to carry out some work at International Peace Park in Seven Hills to connect the upgraded facility to the Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer (NSOOS) wastewater infrastructure. As the design develops, we’ll keep nearby residents and businesses informed about where and when work will happen and what to expect. This project involves:

Benefits

The upgrade will:

  • support growing communities by increasing wastewater treatment capacity for homes, businesses and jobs
  • improve the reliability and resilience of essential wastewater services as north-west Sydney grows
  • provide capacity for the future, including opportunities for recycled water and potential future purified recycled water schemes.
Benefits for the environment

The upgrade will:

  • improve treatment processes and water quality, reducing nutrients released into Breakfast Creek and supporting the health of the Hawkesbury-Nepean catchment
  • support a more circular use of water by creating opportunities for recycled water for uses such as cooling and urban greening
  • manage construction impacts such as noise and dust, maintain safe access where possible, and restore temporarily affected public areas when work is complete.

Impacts

During construction, residents may be temporarily affected by noise, vibration, dust and additional traffic from construction vehicles. As the project progresses, we'll continue to engage with the community to discuss options to further minimise impacts.
