Recycled water requirements

Licensed plumbers working on sites with recycled water must install plumbing correctly to keep recycled water separate from drinking water.

Installing recycled water plumbing

Only licensed plumbers can do plumbing work at properties supplied with recycled water.

If you do not have experience installing recycled water systems, complete additional training through an accredited training provider such as TAFE NSW.

Licensed plumbers who install or maintain recycled water plumbing must comply with:

  • Plumbing Code of Australia
  • AS/NZS 3500
  • Sydney Water installation requirements.

Identify sites with recycled water

You can identify a property connected to our recycled water system by looking for the recycled water service and its clearly marked plumbing components.

A residential property with recycled water may have:

  • purple pipes
  • purple outdoor taps with removable handles
  • a purple water meter
  • warning signs on taps.

Industrial sites can have different colour coding or markings. Check site induction information before you start work.

See where we supply recycled water and how it can be used.

Warning signs must be displayed on recycled water taps.

Check what you can connect

Recycled water is treated so it can be used for approved non-drinking purposes.

What cannot be connected

Do not connect recycled water to:

  • baths, showers, basins or bidets
  • kitchen sinks or appliances
  • evaporative air conditioners
  • swimming pools or spas.

What can be connected

You can connect recycled water at homes and businesses to:

  • toilets
  • garden taps
  • ornamental ponds and water features
  • washing machines (cold-water connection only).

At commercial, industrial and construction sites, you can connect recycled water to:

  • fire services
  • dust suppression systems
  • vehicle and plant equipment washing facilities.

Contact us before starting work on commercial or industrial properties to confirm specific approved uses.

Recycled water can be used to water lawns and gardens.

Install plumbing correctly

You must install recycled water plumbing so it can be clearly distinguished from drinking water plumbing and does not create a cross-connection risk.

When installing recycled water plumbing:

  • use approved pipes, fittings and materials
  • install identification warning tape on recycled water pipework below ground
  • maintain at least 300 mm separation from drinking water pipework below ground
  • maintain at least 100 mm separation from drinking water pipework above ground.

Signs and safety labels must comply with AS 1319.

Connection and metering requirements
See connection requirements for plumbers and metering requirements for plumbers.

Install at least one outdoor drinking water tap and one outdoor recycled water tap at the property.

Recycled water taps must have:

  • left-hand hose connection threads
  • purple identification on the connected pipework
  • clearly visible warning signs at recycled water outlets
  • a purple or powder-coated purple coloured tap with a removable handle.

Fit a hose connection vacuum breaker to any outdoor tap connected to the drinking water supply.

Fire services on sites where we supply recycled water must be connected to the recycled water system.

When installing a recycled water fire service:

  • clearly and permanently label sprinkler system control valves
  • clearly and permanently label fire hydrant outlets, hose reels, valves and outlets
  • identify fire service pipework up to the sprinkler control valve.

For more information, see backflow prevention for plumbers.

When installing a recycled water irrigation system:

  • clearly and permanently label pipework, valves and outlets up to the solenoid controls.

For more information, see backflow prevention for plumbers.

Prevent cross connections

Cross-connections can allow recycled water to enter the drinking water system.

Before completing work, check that:

  • recycled water and drinking water pipework are completely separate
  • outlets, valves and fittings are connected to the correct service
  • recycled water infrastructure is correctly identified
  • required warning signs have been installed.

If a recycled water meter is installed, complete our Recycled water plumbing connection check before commissioning the system.

If a recycled water meter is not installed or the final inspection is not complete, use a temporary bypass to test or charge the on-site recycled water system. Read our Water meter installation guide.

Water meters for recycled water are also purple, for easy identification.

Get the system ready

Before placing a recycled water system into service, complete all required testing, inspections and approvals. For more information, see connection requirements for plumbers.
