North Head Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade

We replaced the odour control system (scrubber) on the Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer (NSOOS) system early in 2017.

This will improve odour management at North Head Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Some related projects remain and will continue until early 2018.

Our work is essential to ensure the treatment plant runs efficiently and reliably.

About the project

We’ve replaced the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer (NSOOS) odour control system at North Head Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The system treats air from the NSOOS as well as the underground screenings area of the plant.

We have:

  • replaced the existing scrubber with nine bio-trickling filters(BTF) and associated infrastructure including duct work, a ventilation stack and water tank
  • modified the underground ventilation system at the plant
  • tested the BTF to confirm reliability during operation at the North Head Wastewater Treatment Plant.

In 2017, we built a standby polishing scrubber that will operate in the unlikely event the BTF is not performing as expected.

In early 2018, we'll decommission and dismantle the existing NSOOS chemical scrubber now that the BTF and standby polishing scrubber are operational.

There will be minimal impacts on the environment during construction and commissioning of the new infrastructure.

Work on this project at North Head Wastewater Treatment Plant is almost done.
