    The Background Summary

    Sydney Water, a State owned corporation wholly owned by the New South Wales Government, delivers essential and sustainable water services for the benefit of the community.

    Sydney Water is Australia’s largest urban water utility with over 3,000 staff and an area of operations covering 12,700 km², and provides drinking water, recycled water, wastewater services and some stormwater services to more than four million people in Sydney, Illawarra and the Blue Mountains.


    Sydney Water uses saw cutting and/or core drilling services to cut and/or drill various types of hard surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, masonry, brick, stone, or any other solid materials in trenching, pipe laying, renewal & maintenance of existing pipes and mechanical operations. Locating services are used to locate underground utilities for the prevention of personal injury, damage to assets, utility downtime and to optimise excavation time.


    The scope of work includes but is not limited to the following:

    Cutting asphalt, concrete, masonry, brick, stone, or any other solid materials, drilling round holes through concrete, masonry, brick, stone, and any other solid material walls, floors or other structures (to a diameter up to 1500mm) The contractor shall provide below saw cutting services for Sydney Water:

    • Road Sawing: to cut expansion joints in the restoration of roadways, asphalt/concrete roads, trenches, concrete slabs, drainage, cables, electrical wires, etc. (to a depth up to 700mm)

    • Wall Sawing: to cut walls and vertical surfaces where the angle is too great to allow a floor saw to be used. (to a depth up to 1000mm)

    • Ring Sawing: to cut walls and floors in materials such as reinforced concrete, precast concrete, asphalt, brick and other materials (to a depth up to 300mm)

    • Hand Sawing: to cut in confined spaces and where road/floor sawing equipment cannot gain access. (to a depth up to 150mm)

    • Removal of all waste and debris that is left behind as a result of cutting or drilling


    The scope of the work includes but not limited to the following:

    • Attend initial meetings with Sydney Water representatives on sites to inspect the sites and to receive survey plans

    • Detect all existing underground utilities and their major laterals using the following locating methods:

    * Standard Underground Utility Detection, or

    * Ground Penetrating Radar (G.P.R)

    • Mark above ground the location and the depth of all existing underground utilities by yellow colour.
