Highschool science, geography and HSC chemistry students will be able to access Sydney Water’s syllabus-linked Tours and Excursions Program online from Term 2

With many teachers and students continuing to teach and study from home during Term 2, Sydney Water has created supporting resources for its syllabus-linked Tours and Excursions Program online in time for back-to-school.

The Tours and Excursions Program is usually hosted at  the Sydney Water treatment plants by qualified teachers and industry professionals.

It provides an opportunity for high-school students to apply their studies in science, geography and HSC chemistry to the real world with tours, hands-on activities and field work.  The syllabus-linked excursions  include lessons on drinking water, wastewater and water recycling.

To continue giving students access to these unique learning opportunities, tours will be supported by new digitalised content hosted on the Sydney Water website.

Materials include at-home experiments, models that can be built using everyday household items, fact sheets including flow charts and diagrams showing the processes at a treatment plant, worksheets including sample exam questions and syllabus-linked lesson plans and assessment tasks for teachers.

Maryanne Graham, General Manager Customer, Strategy and Engagement at Sydney Water says, “We want to continue inspiring students to learn about science through practical application and this shouldn’t stop even in these unique circumstances. Although at this time we aren’t able to hold physical tours and excursions, we are delighted that we have been able to support the online experience so students can continue learning.”

“In the past, our web learning resources have included topics such as the natural water cycle, how to make your own PH indicator and the history of Sydney’s water supply and we’re excited that we can now also offer more online resources to support the learnings from our Tours and Excursions Program.

“We have developed a series of web resources from hands-on experiments, animated videos and syllabus-linked programs and lessons for teachers and we hope this allows students and teachers from across Greater Sydney and beyond to continue teaching and learning during this challenging time.”

Developed by a team at Sydney Water over the last month, the online Tours and Excursions Program will be available in time for Term 2 for highschool and tertiary students, teachers and community groups to access for free.
