Sydney Water has been recognised at the NSW Stormwater Awards for its role in improving waterway health – both in the Western Parkland City and the Central River City.

The Parramatta River Masterplan was the winner for Excellence in Strategic or Master Planning. Sydney Water is the lead coordinator for the delivery of the Masterplan and was instrumental in its development.

The award recognises the hard work of the passionate people at Sydney Water, the member councils of the Parramatta River Catchment Group, government agencies and many community groups in making Parramatta River swimmable again by 2025. The Parramatta River Catchment Group includes Blacktown, Burwood, Canada Bay, Canterbury Bankstown, Cumberland City, Hunters Hill, Inner West, City of Parramatta, and City of Ryde councils.

Sydney Water’s Strategy Analyst, Simon Pearsall, was also recognised for his work on the Masterplan, being awarded Young Stormwater Professional of the Year.

His work with all stakeholders has ensured a collaborative approach to improve the quality of the River during his time as the Catchment Group’s coordinator.

Our Waterways Manager Phillip Birtles and Principal Modeller Stephanie Kermode were recognised for their contribution to Excellence in Research & Innovation, as part of the Development and Application of the Urban Streamflow Impact Assessment (USIA).

Along with team members from CT Environmental, Streamology, Sydney Water, and University of Melbourne, this important work means urbanisation in Sydney’s far West will be built in such a way that ensures iconic species like native fish will thrive in the creek lines into the future.

General Manager for Liveable City Solutions, Paul Plowman said, “Sydney Water is proud of the work we are doing to deliver healthy waterways connected with green, cool urban spaces across Greater Sydney.

“These awards recognise the talented people we have at Sydney Water who are looking to deliver better stormwater and waterway outcomes across Western Sydney.”

The NSW Stormwater Awards encourage and celebrate excellence in the innovation, development, completion and management of stormwater projects and the people involved. For more information on Sydney Water’s work, contact
