Sydney Water is investigating refurbishing the State Heritage listed Boiler House Building, at the Ryde Pumping Station site West Ryde.
The Boiler House Building would retain its heritage features and be modified to accommodate staff currently working in demountable buildings across the site. The demountable buildings would be removed to improve site access, parking, landscaping, the appearance and overall operation of the site.
The Heritage Council of NSW has approved this work. Sydney Water lodged a Crown Development Application (DA) with Ryde City Council for the overall development of the site.
Due to the size of the development, Ryde City Council referred the DA to the Joint Review Planning Panel (JRPP) for determination. Development consent was granted by the JRPP on 17 August 2011.

Historical background
Ryde Water Pumping Station and site is of high cultural significance to the State of NSW for the important role it serves in the history of water supply in Sydney.
The boiler house occupies the central section of the pumping station and is much higher than the flanking engines and economiser houses. The boiler house contains its rail lines and coal bunkers at roof level, but the boilers have been removed.
There is also a reinforced concrete viaduct at the south end, which allowed railway coal wagons to be transported to the top of the building and emptied over the coal bunkers inside.
