New water restrictions exemption

People in Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains can now use a trigger nozzle to water-in new plants for 28 days from the date of purchase.

This will apply before 10am and after 4pm consistent with long-term water saving rules.

Sydneysiders have saved more than 441 billion litres of water since restrictions were introduced in October 2003.

This new exemption means gardeners can water their new plants, with a trigger nozzle for 28 days from the date of purchase, and not risk a restrictions infringement notice - provided they have a receipt.

To qualify for the exemption, the receipt would need to include the plant name, the date purchased and be produced at the request of a water restrictions officer.

People looking to save water in the home and garden can register for Sydney Water’s Love Your Garden program.

For a small fee between $33-$55, a qualified horticulturist will visit your home and evaluate your garden's watering needs and install smart watering tools including a rain gauge and Tap Tags.

Since the program was launched in February 2007 more than 9,500 residential customers have had their gardens visited.

All other restrictions remain in place and long-term water saving rules will apply when restrictions are removed.

A pre-existing limited exemption for establishing new lawn applies to residential customers with brand new homes or where major home renovation works have resulted in damage to the lawn. These customers can apply for exemption by phoning Sydney Water on 13 20 92 during business hours.
