Members of the Hills Community will today join Sydney Water and Greening Australia to help plant 2,900 native trees and plants along Strangers Creek in Beaumont Hills.
Managing Director Kerry Schott said the trees and native wetland species will be planted on Sydney Water’s land along the creek to restore and revitalise native habitats.
“Replanting native vegetation helps to filter pollutants from runoff and improve the quality of stormwater flowing into the Hawkesbury-Nepean River,” Dr Schott said.
“This project is one of many projects Sydney Water undertakes to protect the Hawkesbury-Nepean. They include major recycling schemes, upgrading sewage treatment plants and providing improved sewerage services to villages in the river’s catchment.”
The tree planting day is the first project in a new partnership between Sydney Water and Greening Australia.
Chief Executive Officer of Greening Australia NSW David Butcher said that creating partnerships between community and business is a key aspect of Greening Australia’s Hawkesbury-Nepean River Recovery Program.
“River health affects us all, Greening Australia is pleased to provide opportunities for everyone to be involved in a practical way,” Mr Butcher said.
Dr Schott said that to prevent pollutants running into rivers during rain it is extremely important that land surrounding local waterways and stormwater systems is kept free of rubbish and unsuitable vegetation.
“Sydney Water owns a significant amount of flood prone land in the Hills district adjacent to local waterways, such as Strangers Creek.
“It has comprehensive stormwater quality improvement, weed management and bush regeneration programs on its land to protect the river and nearby houses from flooding.
“This program has already reduced the impact of noxious weeds and introduced species on water quality and aquatic ecosystems. It lowers nutrient levels in the water that can lead to algal blooms.
“We are thrilled this dedicated community is getting behind us to help improve the environment further.
“Sydney Water would like to thank it’s environmental partner, Greening Australia for co-ordinating this fantastic event.”
