The opening of Sydney Water’s services to competition has taken another step forward with key business and local government leaders attending a briefing on competition framework for the supply of wastewater services across Sydney.
The Minister for Water Utilities, Nathan Rees addressed the industry briefing, organised by Sydney Water, and explained the changes under the Water Industry Competition Act.
The briefing sought industry feedback on Sydney Water’s draft wastewater agreement for potential private sector competitors.
This is the first time in Australia that water and wastewater infrastructure is being opened up for direct private sector involvement in the delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure.
The introduction of the Water Industry Competition Act enables the private sector to compete with both Sydney Water and Hunter Water for customers.
The reforms open up new opportunities for the private sector in the water industry.
Since this has never been done before in Australia, it is important to seek the comments and feedback from those in the industry.
Once the detailed framework for wastewater services is finalised, Sydney Water will begin consulting with business and local government about a framework for private sector and local government involvement in the delivery of water services.
It is important that any agreements developed by Sydney Water are consistent with the regulations being developed under the Water Industry Competition Act.
Sydney Water will continue to work with organisations interested in the supply of water and wastewater services.
