Investa Achieves Highest Star Rating for Water Efficiency

Investa Property Group is the first company to achieve a five star rating in water efficiency through Sydney Water’s Every Drop Counts Business Program.

The rating was achieved through a system to help organisations identify their strengths and weaknesses in water management.

The program identifies gaps in current water management, creates an improvement plan and sets a program for improvement. The result is given in star ratings from one to five.

Investa’s five star rating confirms it is achieving best practice water efficiency, having achieved a 38 per cent reduction in water consumption in its NSW operations since 2002-03, and another 21 per cent reduction in the past 12 months.

Since joining the program in February 2003 Investa has implemented a range of measures, saving 470,000 litres a day since 2002-03.

These measures have included installing dual flush toilets, installing flow restrictors, identifying and fixing leaks, and capturing and reusing rainwater.

Investa actively monitored its water use to ensure excess water or rising water use trends were identified and addressed quickly. Water alarms have been set to notify property supervisors by SMS when water consumption exceeds pre-determined levels.

The Every Drop Counts Business Program is a good example of how organisations can use water more efficiently.

The program was launched by Sydney Water in January 2001 and provides free assistance to high water using businesses and government organisations to identify and implement water saving opportunities.

A customised water saving plan is developed and implemented, with ongoing progress reviews to ensure the organisation is achieving optimum results.

The program is going from strength to strength, having attracted 350 organisations operating at more than 1,700 properties and generating savings of about 10 billion litres of water each year.
