Two Water Saving Programs Reach Major Milestones

Sydney Water’s popular WaterFix service is now helping 400,000 households save water.

WaterFix is now saving more than eight billion litres of water a year and is Sydney Water’s most successful water-saving program.

About a quarter of all households across Sydney, Illawarra and the Blue Mountains have now taken part in WaterFix.

Sydney Water has also now issued more than 35,000 rebates through its popular washing machine rebate program.

Households that have switched to new water efficient washing machines are together saving more than 767 million litres each year.

On average, washing machines are the third largest water user, behind showers and outdoor use.

The washing machine rebate was introduced a year ago and its uptake has exceeded expectations. The program has been extended to 31 July 2008.

As part of the WaterFix program, a plumber visits the home to install water efficient showerheads, flow regulators for taps and flush restrictors in single flush toilets and to check for, and repair, any minor leaks.

WaterFix and the washing machine rebate are simple ways for households to save water, without significantly impacting on their lifestyle.

Residents participating in WaterFix can expect to save on average around 21,000 litres of water each year as well as saving money on their water and power bills.

By purchasing a water efficient washing machine customers can save another 21,000 litres of water each year, and save around $25 on their water bill.
