Sydney’s 30,000th rainwater tank rebate has been issued, providing water savings of about 1.2 billion litres each year.
Sydney Water has now paid $9.5 million in rebates to customers who have installed a rainwater tank.
Sydney Water launched the rebate program in 2002 to encourage households to install a rainwater tank in an effort to save water.
Residents are using rainwater – collected from their roof guttering – for many uses such as on their gardens, to wash their car or to flush their toilet.
By using rainwater for these purposes, precious drinking water supplies are conserved and residents can save money on their water bill.
Rainwater tanks are a practical way for households to contribute to water conservation and Sydney Water is sharing the cost through the rebate program.
The rainwater tank rebate was increased to $800 in October last year to encourage more people to take up the rebate.
Rainwater tank rebates are available for Sydney Water residential and business customers as well as schools, which can receive up to $2500.
Measures such as rainwater tank rebates, washing machine rebates, the WaterFix program and water restrictions have now saved more than 240 billion litres of water.
