Boost to Two Water Saving Rebates

Sydney Water will extend and increase two successful water saving rebates.

The $150 washing machine rebate will be extended until 31 July 2008 due to strong demand and the rainwater tank rebate will be increased by $150.

The rainwater tank rebate will be increased to a maximum of $800 for customers who connect the tanks to their home’s internal fittings, such as toilets or washing machines.

Both rebates have proven highly successful incentives to encourage customers to buy water efficient products.

Household water use accounts for about 70 per cent of Sydney’s water consumption.

The $150 washing machine rebate was introduced on March 1 to help the community use water more efficiently and secure our water supplies.

Sydney Water has already issued more than 16,000 rebates worth around $2.4 million. These washing machines are expected to save more than 347 million litres of water each year.

The extension of the washing machine rebate is expected to save 553 million litres of water a year by 2008.

Customers who purchase a new water efficient washing machine can save more than 21,000 litres of water each year as well as around 125 kilowatt hours of electricity and $45 in utility bills.

The rebate is available to Sydney Water residential customers who purchase a new washing machine with a four star or 5A water efficient rating.
Qualifying washing machines are marked with a sticker and Sydney Water has informed all white goods retailers about the rebate.

The Rainwater Tank Rebate Program was launched in 2002 and to date more than 26,000 rainwater tank rebates have been issued. This represents $7.9 million in rebates, which have delivered annual water savings of over a billion litres.

By connecting the tank to internal fittings purchasers can get more use out of their tank.

Rainwater tank rebates are available for Sydney Water residential and business customers.
