Rainwater tanks help save our drinking water and manage stormwater run-off.
In line with NSW Department of Health guidelines, Sydney Water does not recommend the use of rainwater for drinking purposes where a reticulated drinking water supply is available.
Rainwater tanks with a capacity of 10,000 litres or less do not require local council approval (provided they meet the conditions in the policy).
Rainwater tanks with a capacity above 10,000 litres must have local council approval. Plumbers must also supply a plan to Sydney Water showing the location and size of the proposed rainwater tank. This is to ensure there is enough distance between the rainwater tank and Sydney Water's assets.
Under no circumstances can a rainwater tank be built over a Sydney Water maintenance structure or within any Sydney Water easement, regardless of the tank size.
For more information refer to the rainwater tank information pages in the plumbers guide.
New requirements for plumbers installing rainwater tanks
From 1 December 2009, inspections must be booked with NSW Fair Trading for all installations connected to toilets, washing machines or Sydney Water's water supply.
Audit fees can be paid at a Quick Check agent and an inspection booked by calling Fair Trading on 1300 889 099. The Quick Check reference number for the fee must be passed onto the customer for their rebate application form.
All rainwater tank rebate applications must now include:
the audit inspection Quick Check reference number and
a copy of the plumber's Certificate of Compliance for the installation.
Rainwater tank inspection fees are not required for tanks installed under BASIX. An inspection of the plumbing work by NSW Fair Trading officers may still occur.
