Maintaining your rainwater system

Monitoring and maintaining rainwater tanks is the responsibility of the owner and/or end user of the rainwater system. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when maintaining your tank and pump. A regular, proactive approach to maintaining your tank will avoid problems later on.

Maintaining the gutter, roof, tank and pipework, and routinely inspecting and cleaning the system will generally prevent health and aesthetic problems with your rainwater supply.

How often What to maintain
After it rains Clean/empty first flush devices
Drain sections of pipework that are not self-draining
3 monthly or more often as required Maintain clean gutters and roof
6 months Check mosquito screens and tank access points. Repair any holes or damage.
Inspect water for presence of mosquito larvae.
Check pump is in good working order.
12 months Check for leaks in pipework, around tank, pump and repair.
Check structural integrity of the tank.
2-5 years Inspect tank for accumulated sediment and clean tank if required.

Read the brochure Guidance on use of rainwater tanks on the NSW Health website. It contains advice on identifying and managing potential hazards and health.
