Privacy and your personal information

Sydney Water treats customers’ personal information in accordance with the NSW Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (PPIPA).

Our approach to customer privacy is governed by six key principles:

  1. Sydney Water only collects relevant personal information for lawful purposes directly related to its activities.
  2. Sydney Water ensures personal information is protected from misuse and unauthorised access.
  3. Sydney Water ensures that staff who deal with customer information are aware of their obligations to protect privacy.
  4. Sydney Water never discloses information that we expect customers, or their representatives, to know.
  5. Sydney Water will only disclose customer information to third parties where:
    1. We are required to by law
    2. We have the customer’s verbal or written authority
    3. We can reasonably assume in the circumstances that the customer has consented
    4. There is a danger of injury or loss of life
    5. Organisations are contracted to Sydney Water to carry out essential business activities.
  6. Customers can access the personal information we hold for them, and ask us to amend it if incorrect, at any time.
