Water Conservation and Recycling Implementation Report
Sydney Water's Water Conservation Strategy is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its type in the world. The Strategy and other actions have kept demand for water at around the same level over the last 25 years, despite a population increase of almost one and a half million people.
This Report contains the key water saving highlights achieved during 2006-07 in:
Residential
- more than 40,000 Department of Housing homes were fitted with WaterFix devices in 2006-07, doubling the total of homes fitted and achieving total savings of around 1,460 million litres a year
- more than 90,500 Do-It-Yourself Water Saving Kits were distributed in 2006-07, which resulted in savings more than doubling to 618 million litres a year
- one-in-four homes in Sydney Water's area of operations have now been fitted with water saving devices through the combined WaterFix and DIY Kits programs achieving savings of around 10,000 million litres a year
- more than 36,500 rainwater tank rebates have been paid, saving almost 1,500 million litres a year
- more than 54,000 washing machine rebates have been paid, saving almost 1,200 million litres a year.
Business
- 369 business customers have joined the Every Drop Counts Business Program to identify ways of saving water in 1,900 business sites taking total business sector savings to more than 11,000 million litres of water a year
- every council in Sydney Water's area of operations is participating in the Every Drop Counts Business Program
Leaks
- Sydney Water inspected 18,080 kilometres of mains in 2006-07 under leak reduction initiatives, achieving savings of more than 20,000 million litres a year
Recycling
- a recycling facility at Wollongong STP providing water to BlueScope Steel was commissioned in September 2006 and is expected to recycle 7,300 million litres a year
Sydney Water also piloted 5 new programs during the year, including detecting leaks in schools which helped 20 schools save over 280,000 litres of water a day.
Our water conservation and recycling activities are now saving almost 57 billion litres a year.
