Did you know that you could be losing the equivalent of a pool full of water every year from leaks, evaporation and over cleaning?
That's up to 25,000 litres of water per year depending on the size of your pool. That's water that you have to pay for.
Well there's no need to order everyone out of the pool and drain it just yet - you can still enjoy a good splash, stop water and energy wastage and get more months of swimming in with these simple tips.
Things to consider
Using a pool cover makes a huge difference by reducing evaporation and keeping your pool clean. It also saves energy by reducing heat loss in heated pools. Plus, you will save money on pool chemicals.
Keeping the chemical balance right means you'll save time, reduce chemical costs and you won't have to empty your pool unnecessarily.
Try to keep your pool chemically balanced and properly filtered all year.
Limit the amount of times you top up your pool.
Think about solar heating your pool in the cooler months. You can get at least another three months use out of your pool by heating it to 25°C.
Regularly check your pool for leaks.
Keep the water level of your pool halfway up the skimmer opening for maximum water efficiency and try to clean your skimmer often.
In summer, it's best to run your pool filter eight to 10 hours a day - especially when people are in the pool.
Backwash only until the water is clear in the sight glass or at the drain point. This shouldn't take any more than one or two minutes.
You can get information on swimming pool regulations from your local council.
