African Tulip-tree

Spathodea campanulata - botanical name

Spathodea campanulata

Evergreen showy tree (12m x 7m) from West Africa. Large fern-like leaves with deep green leaflets. Upturned curved unopened olive green buds expanding to trumpet-shaped scarlet or orange-red flowers with yellow throats in spring and throughout the year. Useful for shade; specimen for its flower colour and tropical effect. Suitable for warm coastal gardens. Needs protection from strong winds as branches prone to shattering. Prefers moist fertile soil but tolerates drought periods. Frost sensitive but often recovers.
