Sustainable building (BASIX)

Water efficient tap with aerator

Water saving taps help you meet the BASIX targets.

The Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) helps reduce water and energy use in homes across NSW.

BASIX requires all new homes to be more efficient than average homes.

New homes must:

  • use up to 40% less drinking water
  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40%.

BASIX also applies if you're spending over $50,000 on renovations to an existing home.

How to comply with BASIX

BASIX is an online assessment tool that measures your plans against targets. To meet the targets, you may need to consider installing a rainwater tank and water saving showerheads, taps and toilets.

Once your design has complied with BASIX, you can print a BASIX certificate. You must attach the certificate to your development application.
