Meters

The property owner is responsible for maintaining the property water service from the connection to Sydney Water’s water main and up to the meter. However, when notified, Sydney Water will:

• maintain, repair and review pipe work when installed with approved materials
• repair main taps
• repair meter isolation valves.

Installing a meter

Only Sydney Water or a licensed plumber can fit water meters to a property. Refer to Standard meter fit guidelines (PDF - 160KB) for more information.

Providing water services to new residential developments

When providing water services to new residential developments, developers must install the water service connection (drilling) and a pre-laid property service (main to meter) for both drinking and non-drinking (recycled) water where available for each property. Water Service Coordinators manage these installations.

Providing water services to existing properties

When installing a new water service to a commercial/industrial property or an existing property in an existing estate, it only needs to be extended from the outlet of the water meter. Meter spacing and connections remain unchanged.
