West Camden STP upgrade and amplification

Background

West Camden Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is being upgraded as part of Sydney Water's long-term water and wastewater strategy. This upgrade will help meet Sydney Water's commitment to improved water quality in the Hawkesbury Nepean River system.

The West Camden STP releases treated wastewater to the upper reaches of the Nepean River via Matahil Creek. The plant's catchment is 5,900 hectares with a current population of 40,000 residents.

The STP serves the more established towns and villages of Camden, Camden South, Elderslie, Narellan Vale, Harrington Park, Currans Hill, Smeaton Grange, Mt Annan, The Oaks and Oakdale.

The planned upgrade will cater for future population growth, projected to be 80,000 in 20 years. This work will also reduce nutrients in the wastewater released to the Nepean River and improve water quality.

The STP currently treats an average of 9 million litres (ML) of wastewater per day. After the upgrade the STP will be able to process 23 ML per day - more than double its currently capacity of 10.8 ML.

As part of the project, Sydney Water will also be able to supply up to 5 ML per day of high quality treated wastewater for use in local agriculture such as turf and lucerne crops and in dairy farming. This will mean that the volume of water extracted from the river for these purposes will be reduced, thus improving the health of the river.

Construction of the recycled water pipeline is complete and we have successfully delivered 140 ML of recycled water to the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute over the past 4 months.

The upgrade is expected to be complete in early 2009.
