Sydney Water is delivering SewerFix, a program that aims to protect public health and the environment by significantly reducing overflows and leaks from the wastewater system by 2012.

Over the four years to 2012, Sydney Water will spend $560 million fixing leaks and blockages in pipes, installing new pipes and wastewater infrastructure and upgrading wastewater pumping stations. The work is split into four programs:

1. Wet Weather Overflow Abatement Program

Sydney Water is working to reduce the frequency of wet weather wastewater overflows to meet targets set by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Read more about the wet weather Overflow Abatement Program (PDF - 221KB)

3. Avoid Fail Program

Sydney Water will spend about $200 million between 2009 and 2012 to rehabilitate large wastewater pipes and aqueducts. More than 40 kilometres of wastewater pipes will be repaired under this program. Read more about the Avoid Fail Program

4. Dry Weather Overflow Abatement Projects

Fats, debris, tree roots and other materials can find their way into the wastewater system and block it, preventing it from working properly. These blockages can cause a 'dry weather overflow', meaning wastewater overflows into the environment. Sydney Water continues to work removing blockages from the public wastewater system. We are also helping customers understand their role in maintaining their private wastewater pipes. Read more about the dry weather Overflow Abatement Program
