Major infrastructure projects such as the Replacement Flows Project have impacts and benefits that extend beyond a single local government area and across a number of government departments. To minimise the number of separate approvals required for these types of projects, the NSW Government has developed a planning process that streamlines and integrates the approval process. One of the requirements is that an Environmental Assessment is prepared and made publicly available by exhibition.
The Environmental Assessment for the Replacement Flows Project is based on various surveys and specialists studies conducted to understand the impact of the project on the ecosystems and community of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River and its catchment.
The Environmental Assessment Report was placed on public exhibition in late 2006.
During the exhibition period the public was invited to review the document and forward submissions to the Department of Planning for consideration in its assessment of the project.
Sydney Water prepared a Preferred Project Report addressing the issues raised in the submissions, and the Minister for Planning approved the project in July 2007.
