The plant was built in 2007 as part of the Brooklyn and Dangar Island Sewerage Scheme and treats wastewater from the villages of Brooklyn, Dangar Island and, more recently, Mooney Mooney and Cheero Point.

It uses a bioreactor, membranes and ultraviolet (UV) technology to treat wastewater before it is released. The bioreactor first uses microorganisms to break down the wastewater. The biologically treated wastewater then moves into the membrane chamber where it is sucked through microporous membranes that remove solids, bacteria and viruses. It is then pumped through the UV disinfection system for further treatment.

Sydney Water has withdrawn the application submitted to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure to increase the nutrient limits in discharges from the plant.
