Renewable Energy

Sydney Water recently implemented a Renewable Energy Generation (REG) Program in line with its pledge to be carbon neutral by 2020. As part of the program, Sydney Water installed a cogeneration plant at Warriewood Wastewater Treatment Plant to convert biogas, a product of the wastewater treatment process, into electricity. The capacity of the cogeneration plant is over 250 kilowatts. Every year, it produces over 1,300 megawatt hours of green electricity and generates about 50% of the Treatment Plant's power.

Sydney Water also installed a hydro-electric generator at the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant, to capture energy from the flows of water and wastewater. The hydro-electric generator at North Head is the first of its kind in Australia. Thanks to this innovation, as well as a cogeneration unit, the Treatment Plant now generates about 40% of its own power. [read more]
