Tour the Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant is Sydney's largest.

Where is the plant?

The Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant is on Fisherman's Road, Malabar.

What will we see there?

The plant is the largest wastewater treatment plant in Sydney, serving about 1.8 million people. It treats about 480 ML of wastewater a day to primary standard .

You'll see treatment processes such as screening and settling.

You'll also see how the plant captures and reuses methane gas , recycles some of the treated effluent and turns waste materials into biosolids for use in agriculture.

The tour explains how treated effluent is piped 3.6 km out to sea through a deepwater ocean outfall and how this has improved the marine environment.

What happens on the tour?

The tour takes about two hours and includes a multimedia presentation and site tour.

The group will be met by the tour leader, who will escort you and explain the treatment processes.

Health and safety

Everyone on tour must follow our instructions. These include:

  • wearing sturdy covered shoes (no thongs or sandals)
  • switching off mobile phones
  • not touching equipment
  • washing hands after the tour
  • not smoking, eating or drinking during the visit.

You may need to wear safety hats and communication systems (Sydney Water supplies this equipment).

All plants contain stairs and you must be able to climb them.

In an emergency, you may have to climb about 30 steps from the underground area of the plant.
