Every Drop Counts in Schools case studies

Inspiring EDC schools share their experiences of being part of the EDC in Schools Program.

Pittwater High School

Pittwater High School targeted water efficiency as part of its drive to become carbon neutral and signed up to the Every Drop Counts in Schools Program in 2008. They offer an inspiring example of what's possible for other schools committed to environmental sustainability.

The school has installed rainwater tanks to flush toilets and water agricultural plots and sports ovals. It also uses smart water monitoring to understand and manage its water use.

Pittwater High School wins water efficiency award

As a result of joining EDC in Schools, the school entered and won the 2009 Small Enterprise Water Efficiency Award as part of Sydney Water's prestigious annual water efficiency awards. The award recognises:

Pittwater HS Principal Ross Cusworth and head teacher Peter Bradley receive their award from Sydney Water
  • a commitment to water and wastewater efficiency
  • innovation in water management
  • improvements in water efficiency during 2008-09.

Key aspects that set the school apart in the competition were saving over 50% of its drinking water since 2007-08, using innovative smart water metering devices and using water data in curriculum to engage students.

Congratulations to Pittwater High School on an outstanding effort.

Granville South High School

Granville South High School uses the EDC in Schools Program to find leaks and use water more efficiently in the school. Since 2008, a student interest group tracks the school's water use. In that year, the online monitoring system showed a large leak on the school grounds so a leak detection expert was called in. A leaking pipe was found under the school's quadrangle, and once fixed, the water use was reduced by about 33,000 litres a day.
