Information for home owners and tenants

The assistance that is available from Sydney Water will depend on whether you receive a bill directly from Sydney Water. The bill must be issued in your name and you have liability to pay the account.

Residential owner occupiers

People who own and occupy their home receive a bill from Sydney Water in their own name and are responsible for all account charges. If in financial difficulty, you can apply for assistance which may include:

Private tenants

Sydney Water issues the bill for a rental property in the name of the landlord and/or property manager who have responsible for paying all account charges. Landlords may request a tenant to pay for water usage charges. However landlords are responsible for maintaining water efficiency within dwellings through plumbing and basic fittings such as toilets.

Private tenants may apply for assistance from Sydney Water through the Payment Assistance Scheme for usage charges, if liable.

Housing NSW tenants

Housing NSW has its own internal processes for the recovery of costs from public tenants. They are responsible for maintaining water efficiency within dwellings through plumbing and basic fittings. Public tenants may apply for assistance through the No Interest Loan Scheme.
