Starting on the graduate program in 2010 I wasn’t really sure what I would be in for but so far I found it both challenging and rewarding. My current placement has given me an introduction to many aspects of the water industry as well as helping me adjust from university to corporate life. In my future placements I hope to work in different areas to broaden my knowledge of the water industry as well as discover where I would like to end up working permanently.
Sydney Water promotes an excellent work-life balance with staff able to take advantage of lunchtime fitness classes or sport. The nine day fortnight is another way Sydney Water allows its staff to have a life outside of work.

Sydney Water's graduate program is dynamic, fun, professional and rewarding. With a three year program, there are plenty of opportunities to find an area that interests you. I have started out in Waste Water Operations where I have worked with water industry professionals and gained experience in dealing with operational, efficiency and safety issues. I have also had the opportunity to liaise with people from all over Sydney Water, which has not only helped developed my industry knowledge, but also helped me to network for future placements. Sydney Water's graduate program also offers lots of great benefits including first class training (including CPR, white card, project management and confined spaces), as well as flexible working conditions, and a 9-day working fortnight.

The Sydney Water graduate program has been a great tool that has allowed me to make an easy transition from university to the corporate world. The key areas to highlight about this program would have to be the rotational placements, and the on-going training courses. I am currently in my second placement and have had the opportunity to work in Design Services and Maintenance Engineering – two excellent placements with very diverse projects.
Sydney Water also encourages continual professional development through a number a training courses, personally I have found the Project Management and the Negotiation Skills & Dispute Resolution courses to be quite beneficial. There is also a wealth of knowledge to be absorbed from many of the experienced staff here at Sydney Water. I am grateful for the support and guidance that has been provided to me from a number of senior staff – advice that I have applied to both my work and personal life.

I started on the Graduate Program in 2010, and was pleasantly surprised with Sydney Water's dedication in developing their grads. The program is designed to expose grads to a number of different experiences and train them to become leaders of the future Sydney Water.
My first placement was in Maintenance, Business Improvement. This role was particularly interesting, as the work was varied and involved projects spanning across the whole of the Maintenance division. I was given the opportunity to extensively network with people across business units in Civil Delivery, Mechanical Electrical Delivery, Maintenance Engineering, OH&S, the Maintenance Executive panel, as well as others outside of Maintenance. I was able to seek areas of interest outside of my position, to develop my skills further and gain more knowledge of the business. Some projects I completed/assisted with included; creating an Environmental Field Guide for Maintenance Field staff in Civil Delivery and designing the Maintenance Executive's 5 year Strategic Plan.
For my second placement, I chose something completely different and threw myself into Treatment Operations, at West Hornsby wastewater treatment plant. I've always wanted to work in an operational environment and thoroughly enjoy challenges. Once again, the team are very helpful and are committed to my development at the plant. A benefit to working at this Hub is that there are a lot of things going on in maintenance and optimisation of the plants.
